We took 2 days to get to Vancouver, stopping in Salmon Arm to visit family, and then leaving the next morning.  We met a fellow photographer friend, Kim Elsasser, in Kelowna for lunch and a surprise boat ride on the lake.   We stayed with friends in Vancouver, went for lunch with family, and just enjoyed our time there.  In the evening was the concert.  Bon Iver.  We had front row tickets.  It was an amazing show.  One of the best shows I have ever seen.  The 9-piece band and their new arrangements transformed the classics, and enhanced the new songs.  Other Lives opened and they were really great as well.  In the morning it was off to Eugene.  Eugene is a very unique place.  We found a cheap hotel and then got ready for the show.  Once again we were treated to one heck of a show.  Dan Mangan (a fellow Canadian) opened for the up and coming Blind Pilot.  But if you were at the show, you would think they were already huge stars.  In the morning we went to Voodoo Doughnuts, a Eugene and Portland exclusive, that is worth the trip.  And then it was off to a fantastic brunch on Campus.

Our next stop was the Redwood Forest.  The Redwoods are an amazing sight.  Taking a walk into the forest is one of the most humbling and awe inspiring feelings.  The Redwoods are the largest living things and some have been alive for around 2000 years.  After a day in the forest we headed to the Oregon Coast.  This is a trip that my family did when I was 11.  I remembered it from then, but as an adult, I had even more respect the area.  Mile after Mile of gorgeous coast, Rocky shoreline, and beaches.  We wish we had more than 2.5 days to explore this area, and might have to head down for a family vacation one day.  After the famous Cannon beach we headed over to Astoria, home of the Goonies.  A fantastic city that we will head back to again.  We just really enjoyed the feel of it.

After Astoria, we went over to Portland.  We have heard that Portland was amazing, and it was.  We stayed in amazing BnB from 1905 and we explored downtown, the market, the Food Trucks and one of the trendy streets.  We are definitely going to head back one day to enjoy the rest of it.  One stop in Seattle to meet a friend’s Dad, the very talented photographer Doug Loates, a lot of shopping on Steph’s part, and then we headed home, stopping in Jasper for an Engagement session.

It was a fantastic road trip that I would recommend to everyone (Steph’s parents ended up doing an extended version of the trip 2 weeks later).  And like most trips, it makes you want to travel more, and go back to visit your favourite places.  As always, we took a lot of pictures.  We even borrowed at Sony NEX-3 mirror less camera to try out, so a bunch of the images are fromt that camera.   Here are a “couple” of our favs for your enjoyment, and at the end is a collection of my iPhone photos of the entire trip.

However, this post is not necessarily about them.

At their wedding, Joanna took the opportunity to introduce to me to one of her Bridesmaid’s.  She mentioned that she had just bought a new camera, and needs to learn how to use all of the buttons.  She and I chatted for a few minutes before we got interrupted to take a picture.  A few weeks later, we began chatting on Facebook a little bit, and then we decided to get together so I could teach her how to use her camera.  We both claimed it wasn’t a date, but we both knew it was.  This was the beginning of what would become the story of us.  Just over a year from then, I would propose just outside of Regina, and less than a year later, on August 20th, 2010, we were married.

Having been to over 200 weddings in the last 10 years, I knew what I didn’t want at my wedding.  I knew that I wanted my closest friends and family there.  I knew I wanted great music.  And I knew that I wanted something outdoors and in nature.

We were married in an outdoor ceremony performed by my youngest sister Kristina.  The three of us personalized the ceremony so that it reflected both Steph and I.  And we each wrote our own vows, which was a lot easier than I thought it would be, and Steph’s vows made me smile inside.  The ceremony to me is something that I will never forget.  Watching Steph walk towards me over the hill to the sound of Sigur Ros, hearing her vows, and just seeing that amazing smile and knowing I get to see it always.

We then jumped into an outdoor reception lit by chinese lanterns and twinkly lights.  After our consultation with ID Bohemia we put an emphasis on reflecting ourselves in the reception decor.  Instead of a slideshow, we decided to have 200 framed images of our lives on the tables.  Instead of a cake, we had people shaped donuts from a bakery our family has been going since I was a kid.  We had candles with some of our favourite song lyrics and photos.   We had 2 fantastic MCs, Michelle and Katrina, who did even better than we thought they would.  Our more than amazing parents and family and friends gave heartfelt speeches that we will never forget.

And following that we jumped into the dance.  We had a dance floor outdoors surrounded by lights and stars, and a fantastic band led by Martin Kerr.  Our first dance was to a song by Joshua Radin, and Martin had accompaniment by Steph’s 2 sisters Kristyn and Breanna.  It was a goosebumpy moment for us both. I remember looking out and seeing our friends and family cuddling with their loved ones as we danced.  The rest of the night was filled dancing and family and friends.

In the end, it was a wedding that we will both cherish.  A wedding that ultimately was about us.  Steph and I love weddings.  And after being to so many of them, our wedding is still our favourite.

It is hard to believe that I only met Steph 3 years ago.  There is no one that I have ever felt so close to.  Together we are a team.  I am so proud to call her my wife.  But she is more than just my wife.  We are both extremely lucky to be able to work together.  To share our days together.  Thank you Steph for being you, and for letting me be me.  You are my favourite.

We’ve been long time members of the Professional Photography Association of Canada.  Gord’s actually served a two year term as the president for Alberta and has earned him self numerous awards over the years.  Shaun and I are starting to jump in and become more active members.  We’ve also had some success in the competitions held over the years.  Last year one of my images won Portrait of the year!  This year all three of us had at least two of our images accepted into the 2011 print salon and one of Shaun’s images even earned a merit.

The PPOC print competitions are judged by a pannel of 5 accredited photographers, who’ve have taken the associations judging course. There are numerous categories for each field of photography and every image submitted (180 this year) is critiqued on its technical and artistic qualities. Images selected to be part of the print salon for the year can be given either an accepted status, merit status or excellence status (kind of like bronze, silver, & gold).  The critique room is open for photographers to sit in on.  We sit in a small dark quite room, while listing to what the judges think of the images.  Its exciting, frustrating, and educational all at the same time.  At the end of the weekend the winning images are announced as well as the photographers of the year at a fancy awards gala.  This year our friend Robert Bray won for portrait photographer of the year

It was a great weekend with two fantastic speakers who’ve inspired and excited us for this coming season! New York’s Susan Stripling was amazing.  Her work is gorgeous and her personality was a breath of fresh air! She was honest about our industry and the amount of work that’s involved if we want to make it our careers.  Jason Groupp who’s also from NY talked to us about his lighting techniques and how they can help to make an image look edgy and stand out.  He was personable and fun to listen to.  Gord always says that if we can walk away from a seminar or workshop with at least one piece of information to implement into our work, then it was worth it.  We definitely took more than one piece.

Another bonus at these conventions is we get to hang out with other photographers in our community.  We’re lucky to have such a positive group of professionals whom we can call friends.  We’re able to learn from each other and collectively become a stronger photography community.

And so as I woke up this morning, I found myself thinking “wow, one year already.  What has changed since that day?”  It reminded me of a scene in the recent movie “Kick Ass” in which the character refers to the last 18 months after his mom passed that “the only epiphany I had was that life goes on.”  And on some level I wish that was more true.  Sure life does go on.  But it isn’t the same.  From that moment on, life goes on, but it has taken a different direction.  Since then, our family has mutated in more than just the obvious ways.  Steph and I got married in August.  Tara (Sister) came back from Alabama, only to accept a playing position in Germany.  Kristina (other sister) accepted an 18 month position for the accounting firm she works with in England.  So a lot has changed.  But I also realize that a lot more has taken place.  All of us have changed.  Everything that we have experienced in this past year, has changed us on some level.

People always say “live life to the fullest.”  It’s cliche for a reason.  But really, what is living life?  Is it finishing off your bucket list?  I went bungee jumping last year for the first time.  And it was amazing.  It is a feeling that cannot be described.  It is something I would recommend to everyone.  But life isn’t about what you have done, or where you have been, or even what you have accomplished.  To me, it’s about the experience.  The relationships.  And to some extent it’s about being.  The best part of bungee jumping wasn’t saying that i did it, but the feeling you have just before you jump, and the feeling you have 1 second later.  The feeling that you conquered fear, and the excitement that you succeeded.  Sometimes saying “hi” to that one person is a bigger fear barrier to break.  I know that personally.

But it isn’t just the big moments that matter.  Life is full of moments and instances that mean more than the big adventures will.  And if you don’t experience those moments truly, then you are truly missing out.  Sometimes it’s not the first kiss that means the most, but the first hug because it was truly needed.  Live life.  It doesn’t require grand adventures or giant steps.  It requires conscious effort.  Effort to experience everything.  Take the time, no matter what you are doing, to think about it.  Use all of your senses, and just experience it.  You may just find something that you never noticed before.  When you are with your loved ones.  Your family.  Your friends.  Experience them.  Pay attention to what they are saying.  Watch them.  Hear them.  Be with them.  Ignore that last text or Facebook comment.  Technology has given us many ways to connect, but it has taught us that it doesn’t really have to be meaningful.  Instead of working that extra 3 hours so you can save up for that new car, go home and be with your family.  Go talk to your friend that you haven’t seen in weeks.  But really be with them.  It will be an exchange that changes your life on some level.

So stop being afraid of life and live it.  If something scares you, there is a good chance you should do it.  Break down the invisible walls and live life with less regret.  Be yourself.  Experience EVERYTHING.  Stop, look around at the beauty that surrounds you all the time.  Whether you are standing on top of a mountain in Iceland looking down on one of the most picturesque vistas imaginable, or sitting in your office downtown, there is beauty to be found in everything.  You just have to find it.

I miss my Mom just as much as I did the first day.  What has changed?  What hasn’t?

I feel so lucky to have such wonderful bride and grooms. Every one of them have been so helpful and friendly to us. They give me tips, pass along advice, spread sheets, workouts, and well wishes. Its truly wonderful to feel so supported.  I almost teared up last weekend when the bride thanked us during her speech, giving her best wishes for our wedding.

Speaking of feeling supported…We have some amazing friends and family who’ve helped us out along this process.  Last night it felt like a Martha Stewart work shop over at the Scade’s house!  Shaun and I invited  a bunch of people over to help us with a few craft projects in our wedding.  We had people cutting, glueing, assembling, and designing.  I’ve always loved crafting, and the personal touches to our decor are special for us.  Plus, I’m dutch and Shaun’s 1/2 Scottish..so saving a little money is a BIG DEAL.  haha.  Things ran super smoothly and we accomplished more than I’d expected to!  THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU! It was back in November when I first signed up for an account on a wedding website.  I hoped it would keep us on track while we planned our own wedding this year.  Christmas flew by, New years too.. and suddenly we were in the middle of January. I’d forgotten my original password on the wedding site so I started up a new account with a new website. Thats how organized I was.

We want our wedding completely outdoors!  Well aware of the Edmonton weather, we knew from the start that the 2010 wedding season would be busier than average if we threw ours in the middle. Many of my close friends are already married and I’ve seen how hectic the planning stages of the year can be.

So, I filled out all the categories in our wedding survey, read through the helpful hints, even entered some numbers into a budget guide.   After spending a solid couple of hours creating checklists of things that needed to be accomplished or should have already accomplished, Shaun came down to find me in a severe state of anxiety.  He handed me a beer and told me I wasn’t allowed to use that wedding guide any more.  I was also advised to avoid the wedding section in Chapters. Last time we were there, I was found sitting cross legged in the middle of the ailse with bride-to-be-books scattered around me and a disgruntled look that could give 24‘s Chloe O’brian a run for her money. I couldn’t believe how stressed out I’d become from the tools meant to aid us.

A couple years ago 27 dresses came out in theatres, and even my dad joked that I should have starred in the movie.  I too have a rainbow coloured corner in my closet with bridesmaids dresses.  Plus… Shaun and I work in the industry.  We kind of know the drill, and we absolutely know what we like and dislike. We’re aware of the costs, in most areas… and we knew we’d be spending a large portion of the budget on QUALITY photography. But seriously… even with all of this experience in our holster, when it comes time to make the decisions and actually fork out money, it’s a whole other ball game.

I decided to make a list (well Shaun decided and I agreed) of all the absolutely necessary tasks and I’d avoid all the excess information that was driving me crazy.  It helped.  :)

I’ve learned that the blogs and websites and books and magazines are wonderful to use for INSPIRATION, but for me… that’s where I need to draw the line.  We’re on a limited budget with expensive taste and a lot of people coming to the wedding.  haha. We’re spending money where it needs to be spent (Photography and Dinner/Entertainment) and then cutting back where we see fit.

It wasn’t like we hadn’t accomplished anything. We’d set the date, and finding an outdoor location to fit our LARGE families with copious amounts of friends takes a lot of time and research. We found a golf course out of town that is perfect for us.  Oh, and we had our photographers booked WAAYYY back (I still cant believe we’re having Dana and Alicia shoot the wedding!!!). It’s so perfect, they are incredibly creative and talented photographers who we also get to call our friends.

Anyways I wanted to use this post as a way to show off some of our progress… Things are coming together beautifully now. We found a wonderful marriage commissioner who is willing to work with us in creating a ceremony completely tailored to us. And, back in February we won a contest for a free 2hr consultation with ID Bohemia, they gave us much more than a consult.  Christine and Aaron took us out for dinner.  Found out all about us, and helped us get excited about really bringing our personalities into the wedding.  Both Shaun and I left the dinner feeling like our wedding was going to be the best wedding in the world.  ID bohemia went above and beyond!

They showed up at our house a couple months later with even more inspirations for us. Including a floor plan and idea package to help us visualize everything. I can’t thank them enough. I’m a very visual person. I can relax when I can see everything in front of me.

We’ve booked a band and my dress is almost here!!   I ordered it on Etsy from a designer in Portland, Holly Stalder!  It seems, that as of late I am falling in love with many creative people in Portland. Is it a coinsidence that Amy Seeley is also from there?… i think not .  I found it very early on but decided to first shop around and try on some dresses in town so as not to cheat myself out of one of those once in a life time moments. I went with my mom and two sisters. It was lovely.  I didn’t expect to see me mom get into the dress shopping as much as she did.  It was very sweet.  They all gave me their honest oppinions and I found a few gorgeous dresses.  But none of them compared to what I’d seen on etsy.  So… I tried on dresses with a similar neckline and style got my exact measurements taken and ordered it.  I cant wait to see it.

If you’ve made it this far through my rambling post…thanks for sticking with me. It was not my intention to unload a whole journal entry into this post, but it turned out to be very therapeutic . I’m so impressed with people who let  future brides tag along to learn from their experiences while they plan their weddings and take the time to BLOG about it. It takes time & effort. Its like partaking in extra curricular activities at school. It’s fun and what we love to do, but it definitely takes energy.

There’s Gord! (Just a little outtake from my shots during when Gord was teaching me.)

Stephanie and Shaun soon returned from their trip and a whole different learning experience began. Stephanie started off by showing me how they sort and start to put together albums for their clients. I came here knowing nothing about InDesign and now I feel quite comfortable using it, admittedly I am no where near fully knowledgeable about the program but it was still so fun to learn about it. Blogging was another big thing we discussed (I’m testing my skills now) and I learned it’s such a huge part about promoting a business and its so affordable!  The Monday morning of my second week Shaun surprised me with an assignment, at first I was a tad nervous but once he told me what it was it sounded like it would be a great one. Shaun told me about a group on Flickr started by Kelly Redinger called the Lunch Box Photographers, which is all about going out on your lunch break and shooting the assignment of the week as a chance to just get out, shoot and have some fun. This weeks assignment was to photograph something that looked like a letter and to do everything strictly in camera, meaning no post processing at all(not even any cropping!). I found a ‘v’!

Wednesday I arrived to yet another surprise, we were going on a photo shoot! Overnight Shaun and Stephanie had set up a 50′s themed photo shoot with models, props, hair the whole works! The specifications were to provide 10 photos and a blog post to show everything off (so this is taking care of that last part ). It was so much fun to work with Tammy and Izabela, they looked awesome. Here’s another big thanks to the two of them! We spent a couple hours shooting at Hermitage Park and left with a ton of killer images.

Thursday morning Shaun and I went to the Art Gallery of Alberta to attend a free lunch lecture on Yousef Karsh. After that was over Shaun showed me more on Aperture and PhotoMechanic (I am in love with PhotoMechanic now), he even showed me an awesome site to set up a website. Shaun showed me showitfast.com and it is so easy and customizable, not to mention reasonably priced. Yay for finding an awesome site to help with my project for school, thanks Shaun! I spent the rest of the afternoon playing with the program and got a great start on my design. Now that leaves us on the final day of my work experience, sadly it has to end sometime, which I have spent blogging and it seems a lot easier then I had first thought (likely due to me being a talker and the fact that I tend to ramble).

So thats the gist of my two weeks here with the Scade’s. I had a fantastic time working with Gord, Shaun, and Stephanie from Scade Photography, they’re a blast to be around! I’m so glad they let me spend two weeks with them.

Last night Shaun and I met for drinks at Tesoro with some other people involved in Edmonton’s wedding industry. It was great. The majority of people there were Photographers but we were able to connect other wedding planners, designers, as well as make up artists.

Edmonton has quite a strong photography community in my opinion. Facebook and Twitter serve as powerful tools that help us connect and communicate. There are support groups, fan pages, referral programs and many educational forums out there for us. All of these are right at our fingertips just waiting for us to take it in! We’re supportive of each other’s work and really try to push each other. The goal is to continually raise the bar in our photography knowledge, passion, creativity and business. Why wouldn’t we want to be the strongest community providing the highest quality possible to all of our clients? The PPOC has served as a life line to us literally. When our family was hit with a crisis this past year, there were upwards of 100 people at our side ready to help us out. Many of them were good friends from our photography community. Another studio stepped into shoot and take phone calls for us that week, and an event planner helped us arrange a funeral extremely last minute. It was incredible. We’ve been able to help our photog friends out too at various times and it really makes a difference to know there is quality professional help right in our back pockets.

Elizabeth of ENV photography has been putting together various events for edmonton photographers lately, its been a great way to actually meet all of our new Facebook friends and contacts. As great as it is to use social media sites as a resource and starting point, meeting people and talking to them is vital to starting relationships, as well as trust. Getting to know others in our industry gives us a real perspective for the dynamics behind the scenes. It also helps us develop a trust for others in our field of work. If we need to recommend clients to people its important to really know who they are, how they work, and if their personalities will match with our clients. Its hard to make an informed decision just by viewing a website or blog. Thanks to everyone who showed up. I’d say it was a first of many industry nights to come.

Shaun has a mix of Ukrainian in him as well as Scottish. He, along with the rest of his family definitely enjoy celebrating their culture. The holidays provide opportunities to do this every year, just this past Easter Shaun and I were treated to a delicious Scottish Easter breakfast. Consisting of haggis, and a few things I’d never tried before. Black Pudding and Royal Porriage (Thick hot oatmeal mixed with brown sugar and topped with a splash of Chivas Regal Whiskey..mmmm).  They were presented and served to us with pride. Even if a dish isn’t a particular favourite of the host, it is presented with the same level of enthusiasm. This is the way I am when I have the opportunity to share with others my love for dutch food.

There are numerous dutch meals I could share with you. Some I’ve had to grow an appreciation for, others I still don’t even really want to try (Pickled Herring, that you basically have to swallow whole…YUCK), many that I love and then my absolute favourite. Pannenkoeken. Translation: best pancake ever. It can be served for breakfast as well as supper. Its made similarly to a crepe but is thicker and stronger. Its made strong so that it can hold hold and include different toppings inside of it. Typical breakfast topping include fresh fruit, bacon, eggs, ham, mushrooms and of course a healthy portion of Gouda cheese. They can be lightly dusted with icing sugar and or have thick syrup (Stroop) drizzled all over, as the finishing touch.  I remember having them made for me by my grandma when I was little.  My Grandma used corn syrup because it held the same consistency as stroop. It tasted great to me.  I’ve tried my hand at making these for shaun and friends a few times. Usually a few out of each batch have been good enough to call ‘almost the real deal’ but I definitely still need to practice my frying method and badder consistency.

In Holland you can find Pannenkoken houses scattered through out the cities. They are open usually only for breakfast and then sometimes reopen for supper, but never on Sundays. There is a great little Pannekoken house in Kamloops BC. It’s open from 8am until 2:30pm. Its called the Amsterdam Pancake house. Their Pannenkoken is delicious. Perfect consistency with many yummy toppings, and outstanding service. My family discovered the location years ago and have made a point of stopping there on almost every BC vacation we take just for the breakfasts. It’s owned and operated by a lovely dutch family who love to share their heritage. Today, I finally got to take Shaun there. Obviously I was a little more than excited about this…I’ve written a whole blog post on it.

Like every restaurant we go to, we chose our two favourite options and split them down the middle. I chose the fresh fruit with whip cream option, and he chose the Amsterdam special. (Bacon, eggs, ham, onion and mushroom, topped with Hollandaise sauce). MMMM. Filled us right up and Shaun is definitely on board with helping me perfect the recipe. He enjoyed it as much as I knew he would. I’m sure you all will too. Eet Smakelijk! ;)

Ever since Shaun got his iphone and the wikipedia app a couple of years ago, Ive teased him about being an actual walking encyclopedia. To be honest, its not a bad thing, I can actually say that I learn something new every day.

Today’s piece of knowledge is about food:

Shaun was impressed with the quality of the hollandaise sauce served and said it must be because people from holland would obviously know how to make it best.  I’d never put two and two together before. I thought it came from France. It turns out, that it is in fact a French sauce, but is believed to have mimicked a dutch sauce used for a state visit to France by the King of the Netherlands. Just though you all might want to know that.

I was very impressed with the crews stamina. Most of them working more than 15hr days, and continually giving 100%. The amount of creativity and persistance for excellence was incredible. On the one hand, some technical aspects of photography and video seem somewhat similar. In regards to lighting for a shot, and the difference in lenses. But on the other hand, it’s a whole new ball game. The consistency that’s needed to perfect each scene is ridiculous! My personality would definitely not be the best in this area. They definitely had a team of very dedicated people who all kept each other going through each scene.

Here is a collection of some of the stills we captured over the weekend. The First couple of days were shot in the Hotel suite, and the final day also included some time in a warehouse on the south side of Edmonton. Here they were able to create a rainy night.
