Here she is. The little angel, a.k.a. punk who doesn’t like sleeping at night unless someone is cuddling her. Chloe was born on February 10th. She decided to surprise everyone and show up early.
I originally attempted to do this portrait session a few days after Chloe was born. Isabelle, armed with Starbucks and I with a box of pastries, were going over to see them for the first time since they were out of the hospital. It was a chance for us to visit with Joanna and Chloe one on one. We were going to have a girl’s date and then I’d planned to take some pictures. I’d packed the camera up and the pretty lenses, as well as fluffy blankets. Other than the pre-shoot warm up, researching other blogs for creative ideas and lighting techniques, I haven’t had much experience with photographing newborns. So I was nervous. trying to remember the little tricks everyone kept telling me. Make sure the baby’s been feed, keeping the room warm, use soft window light, etc.
The visit was long overdue. There was lots to catch up on and it was fun seeing how well our friend was adjusting to motherhood. It suits her. We sat in the kitchen chatting while the perfect sunlight streamed in through the patio doors. I kept thinking how perfect it would be to photograph Chloe in it, but I didn’t want to interrupt the visit.
Finally we decided to get started. But of course, Chloe had already napped perfectly during the visit and after eating again she wasn’t as tired as I’d hoped. With the light fading fast we rushed from room to room using the best window light. But alas, I gave up. We rescheduled for two days later. This way Shaun, who wasn’t able to come along on the girl’s date could have a chance to visit and help photograph Chloe too.
Take two went much smoother. We set up an exact time to come over that would be best for Chloe and lighting.
Hope you like them. We do.
-Steph and Shaun
